ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings explore the emotional and psychological relationship between the body, memory, and perception. Through distorted figures, layered forms, and expressive color, I explore states of vulnerability, overstimulation, fragmentation, and human connection.

Painting has long been a way for me to regulate and reconnect with myself. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune neurological condition, the process became deeply tied to grounding, healing, and finding stability within my body.

I often describe art as my “healthy illness”, a compulsive force that holds me steady against the unpredictability of physical experience. In my work, emotional states become physical landscapes: melting, overlapping, dissolving, and reforming through paint.

PROCESS

My process begins internally. I call my paintings “Kopfbilder” - literally “head pictures” in German - because they rarely come from photographs or direct observation. Most of the images I paint appear first in my mind, often suddenly and without explanation.

The most honest way I can describe it is like being a printer: the files just keep popping up. And if I don’t paint them, they kind of follow me around. Painting is my way of getting them out of my head and into the world.

Because of that, my process is very intuitive. I usually don’t plan much beforehand; the figures, colors, and shapes develop naturally while I work, guided more by feeling and instinct than by reference.
